Session on Biodegradable Biomaterials
Degradable biomaterials have tremendous applications in surgery and medicine. Such materials are designed to degrade in the body over a predetermined implantation period, such that degradation achieves or helps to achieve some function. Biodegradable polymers can be either natural or synthetic. The latter offers many advantages than the former because they can be freely tailored to give a portfolio of desired properties.
Synthetic polymers represent a more reliable source of raw materials, free from concerns of immunogenicity. The criteria for selecting polymers for use as biomaterial include mechanical properties (tension, compression, and shear) and the degradation time necessary for a specific application. After fulfilling this purpose, it should be degraded in the implantation site, leaving nontoxic products. Synthesizing polymers with hydrolytically unstable linkages in the backbone is more essential for controlled biodegradation.
