Sessions/Tracks

Session on Biodegradable Biomaterials

Degradable biomaterials have tremendous applications in surgery and medicine. Such materials are designed to degrade in the body over a predetermined implantation period, such that degradation achieves or helps to achieve some function. Biodegradable polymers can be either natural or synthetic. The latter offers many advantages than the former because they can be freely tailored to give a portfolio of desired properties.

Synthetic polymers represent a more reliable source of raw materials, free from concerns of immunogenicity. The criteria for selecting polymers for use as biomaterial include mechanical properties (tension, compression, and shear) and the degradation time necessary for a specific application. After fulfilling this purpose, it should be degraded in the implantation site, leaving nontoxic products. Synthesizing polymers with hydrolytically unstable linkages in the backbone is more essential for controlled biodegradation.

Session on 3D Printing impact on the outbreak of COVID-19

3D printing has come a long way in recent years, with manufacturing times improving. The time it takes to print items depends on both the quality of the printer as well as the complexity of the item being printed. As we enter a new stage with COVID-19 continuing to obstruct supply chains and causing shortages of essential medical equipment, the 3D printing community is stepping in to help.

The 3D printing community is coming together with a number of initiatives to help. Many companies and organizations are taking aim at the shortages to quickly get materials in the hands of medical professionals, as well as the general public. In this session, we discuss the wide innovation and the procedures of 3D printing which is manufactured to confront the outbreak of COVID-19.

Synthetic Polymers like Polypropylene, Polymethyl methacrylate and Polyvinylchloride (PVC) are used in medical disposable supplies, implants, dressings, etc. Biopolymers are established from the living organisms. Some of the examples are DNA, RNA, proteins, carbohydrates, etc. It can also be used as packaging material.

Bioceramics play a pivotal role in the regeneration of bone. It adds value to the wellbeing of humans. Many classes of bioceramics are available for orthopedic application. The choice of bioceramics depends on the nature of the defects to be repaired. The mechanical property of bioceramics is engineered to suit different applications like reinforcing material, cement, implants, etc. The longevity of bioceramics is up to a maximum of 15 years. In the future, research may be directed to increase the life of implant inside the living system.
