Biography

Dr. Min Wang is a tenured professor and currently Programme Director of the Medical Engineering Programme at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). (HKU's "Medical Engineering Programme" is re-titled as "Biomedical Engineering Programme" starting from 2018/19.) He is / was also a guest professor or adjunct professor of several universities in mainland China (Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, Southwest Jiaotong University, South China University of Technology, etc.). He was Chairman of the Biomedical Division of Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Min Wang was awarded BSc (1985) and PhD (1991), both in Materials Science and Engineering, by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, and University of London, U.K., respectively. For professional qualifications, he is a Chartered Engineer (CEng, 1995, U.K.) and a Chartered Scientist (CSci, 2005, U.K.). Dr. Wang has been elected a fellow (FIMMM, elected in 2001) of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, U.K., a fellow (FIMechE, elected in 2007) of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, U.K., a fellow (FHKIE, elected in 2010) of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, Hong Kong, Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE, elected in 2011) by the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering (IUS-BSE), a fellow (AIMBE Fellow, elected in 2012) of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, U.S.A., and a member (WAC Academician, elected in 2013) of the World Academy of Ceramics (http://www.waceramics.org/). Dr. Wang started his biomaterials research in 1991 when he conducted work on composite materials for medical applications. He was a founding member of UK's Interdisciplinary Research Centre (IRC) in Biomedical Materials at the University of London and worked on various projects in the IRC (at Queen Mary College, University of London) between 1991 and 1997. Before joining The University of Hong Kong in June 2003, Dr. Wang had conducted teaching and research in Nanyang Technological University (NTU) (1997-2002), Singapore, and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) (2002-2003), Hong Kong. At NTU, he set up and led the Biomaterials Strategic Research Programme and the Tissue Engineering Laboratory. At PolyU, he helped to set up facilities in the Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Laboratories. At HKU, he has played a key role in the administration and development of the interfaculty Medical Engineering (MedE) Programme and setting up Faculty of Engineering's Medical Engineering Laboratory. As Programme Director, he has taken HKU's MedE Programme through two successful accreditations by HKIE (in 2013/14, provisional accreditation; in 2016/17, full accreditation). In various places, Dr. Wang set up and taught / teaches courses in biomaterials and tissue engineering, biomechanics, and biomedical engineering. Over the years, Dr. Wang and his co-workers have investigated and developed various biomaterials for medical applications. The biomaterials that he and his co-workers have worked on include bioactive calcium phosphates [hydroxyapatite (HA), tricalcium phosphate (TCP), etc.], Bioglass, A-W glass-ceramic (Cerabone A-W), as well as nonporous composites (such as hydroxyapatite reinforced polyethylene (HAPEXTM), coatings and porous tissue engineering scaffolds containing these bioactive materials. The bioactive composites that he and his colleagues developed have been patented in the U.S.A. For developing tissue engineering scaffolds, his group has investigated various fabrication techniques, including emulsion freezing and freeze-drying, selective laser sintering (SLS, also called "3D printing"), and electrospinning. He and his research staff / students have won many awards at international conferences for their research. Dr. Wang has authored / co-authored a large number of research papers as well as many book chapters. His research has been widely cited by other researchers. For his research work, he has given many presentations, including more than 150 invited talks, at various conferences. He has also given more than 100 seminars in universities, research institutes or hospitals in Western Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. He has provided consultancy on biomaterials and biomedical engineering to multinational companies headquartered in the U.K., U.S.A. or Hong Kong. Since 1990, Dr. Wang has served as a reviewer for more than 110 international scientific journals in the fields of materials science and engineering, biomaterials and tissue engineering, physics, chemistry, medicine, dentistry, medical devices, biofabrication, nanoscience, nanotechnology and 3D printing, including all top journals in the biomaterials and tissue engineering fields. Dr. Wang has been the Series Editor of Springer's books series Springer Series in Biomaterials Science and Engineering (http://www.springer.com/series/10955) since it was launched in 2012. He is the Section Editor for Biomaterials for Elsevier's Encyclopedia of Biomedical Engineering . He has also been an Editor / Associate Editor / Regional Editor of several international journals (Materials Letters, Nano LIFE , Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing , etc.) and has served as an Editorial Board member of many international journals, including (1) Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Medicine (Springer, Germany), (2) Biomedical Materials: Materials for Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine (IOP, UK) (2006 - 2012), (3) IET Nanobiotechnology (IET, UK), (4) Journal of Orthopaedic Translation (Elsevier, the Netherlands), (5) Journal of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering (American Scientific Publishers, USA), (6) International Journal of Tissue Regeneration (Catholic University of Korea, Korea), (7) Biomaterials Research (Korean Society for Biomaterials, Korea), (8) Composites Science and Technology (Elsevier, the Netherlands), (9) Surface and Coatings Technology (Elsevier, the Netherlands) (2004 - 2015), (10) Frontiers of Materials Science (Higher Education Press, China, and Springer, Germany), (11) Journal of the Royal Society Interface (The Royal Society, London, UK) (2010 - 2016), and (12) International Materials Reviews (IOM3, UK). Since 2000, Dr. Wang has reviewed research grant applications for national research councils / funding agencies of a number of countries (U.S.A., Germany, Switzerland, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, etc.). He has served as an Expert Member (2003 - 2007) of the Project Selection/Awarding Panel for Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and as a Member of the Engineering Panel (2016 - Present) of the Research Grants Council, Hong Kong. He has also served in three Technical Committees (TC) of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Since 1999, Dr. Wang has served as Chairman and/or Organizer (or Co-Chair / Co-organizer) of 22 international conferences / symposia / workshops, including the 2nd International Symposium on Surface and Interface of Biomaterials (ISSIB-II, Feb. 4-6, 2010, Hong Kong, http://web.hku.hk/~memwang/files/cm03/ISSIB-II.pdf) and symposia in World Biomaterials Congresses. He has also served in committees of more than 70 conferences. In recent years, he has served as a member of HKIE's Visiting Team for the accreditation of biomedical engineering programmes in universities in Hong Kong. Dr. Wang actively participates in professional societies' activities and has served in various roles in these societies. He has been a Council Member of the Chinese Society for Biomaterials (CSBM), China, Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), Asian Biomaterials Federation, and World Association for Chinese Biomedical Engineers (WACBE), Regional Group Representative for Asian-Pacific and member of the Administrative Council of the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE), and a member of the ICF-BSE Steering Committee of the International College of Fellows in the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering (IUS-BSE). He is also a member of the Engineers Registration Board in Hong Kong and serves in the Technology Advisory Panel of the Technology Business Incubation Programme in the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park. Dr. Wang's current research interests include biomaterials, tissue engineering, materials and systems for drug / biomolecule / gene delivery, and theranostics. He teaches courses in materials science and engineering, biomaterials and tissue engineering, biomechanics, and biomedical engineering for undergraduates, postgraduates and clinicians. To promote the engineering profession in general and both materials science and engineering and biomedical engineering in particular, Dr. Wang has also gone to local schools (in Singapore and Hong Kong, respectively) to give talks of various topics to high school students. Responsibility:

Delegates are personally responsible for their belongings at the venue. The organizers will not be held responsible for any stolen or missing items belonging to Delegates, Speakers or Attendees; due to any reason whatsoever.

Insurance:

Registration fees do not include insurance of any kind.

Transportation:

Please note that any (or) all transportation and parking is the responsibility of the registrant.

Press/Media:

Press permission must be obtained from the Allied Academies organizing committee prior to the event. The press will not quote speakers or delegates unless they have obtained their approval in writing. The Allied academies are a non-profit organization. This conference is not associated with any commercial meeting company.

Requesting an Invitation Letter:

For security purposes, the letter of invitation will be sent only to those individuals who had registered for the conference. Once your registration is complete, please contact the program manager to request a personalized letter of invitation.

Regarding refunds, all bank charges will be for the registrant's account. Cancellation, Postponement, Transfer of Registration and all cancellations or modifications of registration must be made in writing to Program Manager.

Postponement:

If Allied academies postpone an event for any reason and you are unable or unwilling to attend on rescheduled dates, you will receive a credit for 100% of the registration fee paid. You may use this credit for another Allied Academies Conferences event which must occur within one year from the date of postponement.

Refund policy:

No refund will be provided. All fully paid registrations are transferable to other persons from the same organization if the registered person is unable to attend the event. Transfers must be made by the registered person in writing to the Program Manager. Details must be included with the full name of replacement person, their title, contact phone number, and email address. All other registration details will be assigned to the new person unless otherwise specified.

Registration can be transferred to one conference to another conference of Allied academies if the person is unable to attend one of the conferences. However, Registration cannot be transferred if it is intimated within 14 days of the respective conference.

Visa Information:

Keeping in view of increased security measures, we would like to request all the participants to apply for Visa as soon as possible. Allied Academies will not directly contact embassies and consulates on behalf of visa applicants. All delegates or invitees should apply for Business Visa only. Important note for failed visa applications: Visa issues cannot come under the consideration of cancellation policy of Allied Academies, including the inability to obtain a visa.

Accommodation Cancellation Policy:

Accommodation Providers (Hotels) have their own cancellation policies, and they generally apply when cancellations are made less than 30 days prior to arrival. Please contact us as soon as possible, if you wish to cancel or amend your accommodation. Allied Academies will advise the cancellation policy of your accommodation provider, prior to canceling or amending your booking, to ensure you are fully aware of any non-refundable deposits.
