Session on: Biomaterials in Tissue Engineering

Biomaterials
are generally prepared from nature or synthesized material in the labs or in research institutes using a variety of chemical methods with the aid of metallic components, polymers, ceramics or composite materials. They are often used and/or adjusted for a medical application, and thus comprise whole or part of a living structure or biomedical device which performs, augments, or replaces a natural function. Such functions may be benign, like being used for a heart valve, or maybe bioactive with a more interactive functionality such as hydroxyl-apatite coated hip implantsBiomaterials are also used in dental applications, surgery, and drug delivery. For example, a construct with impregnated pharmaceutical products can be placed into the body, which permits the prolonged release of a drug over an extended period.

Session on: Nanomaterials

Nanotechnology
uses nanomaterials for the treatment of matter on a nuclear, sub-atomic, and molecular scale. Materials researchers and architects work to comprehend those property changes and use them in the handling and fabrication of materials at the nanoscale level. Nanomaterials are developed to perform novel characteristics in comparison with same material without nanoscale features. The U.S. government allocated more than a billion dollars to nanotechnology research in 2005 to discover new advanced technologies in nanotechnology

Session on: Nanomaterials Characterization and Synthesis

The structural properties of nanoparticles in a thin film is often mandatory to offer these functions and operations. Nanomaterial’s are stepping stone of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Nanostructure science and technology is a broad and interdisciplinary area of research and development activity that is growing rapidly worldwide since few years. It has the potential for revolutionizing the number of ways in which materials and products can be created. Nanoscale materials are defined as a set of substances where at least one dimension is less than approximately 100 nanometers. A nanometer is one-millionth of a millimeter - more or less 100,000 times tinier than the diameter of human’s hair. Nanomaterials are of interest because at this level they have unique optical, magnetic, electrical, and other properties emerge. These emerging properties have the potential for great impacts in electronics, medicine, and other fields. They can also be found in sunscreens, cosmetics, sporting goods, stain-resistant clothing, tires, electronics, as well as many other everyday items, and are used in medicine for purposes of diagnosis, imaging, and drug delivery.

Session on: Advanced Biomaterials

Biomaterials are the non-drug substances which are designed to interact with the biological system either as a part of a medical device or to replace or repair any damaged organs or tissues. Biomaterials can be derived either naturally or synthetically. Natural Biomaterials are silk, gelatin, etc. while the Synthetic ones are the various polymers. Bio-ceramics like Alumina, Bioglass, and Zirconia are used to repair damaged portions of the musculoskeletal system and also used in dental and orthopedic fields. Bio-composites are formed by using resin and natural fibers. It can be non-wood natural fibers (rice, wheat, coconut, etc.) or wood fibers (magazines, soft and hardwoods). Metals are mainly a choice of biomaterials in fields of dentalorthopediccardiac implants. As metals can lead to wear, corrosion, so surface coating and modification of metals are necessary for medical applications.

Session on: Biomaterials in Cardiology

Cardiovascular biomaterials lead the category of biomaterials on the basis of demand and investments in this field. Blood compatibility test is the major criteria which limit the application of biomaterials for cardiovascular surgeries. The current trend of the Cardiovascular Biomaterials is endothelization of the cardiac implants and utility of human pluripotent stem cells. The scope for Cardiovascular Biomaterials is growing day by day and several young investigators and researchers are developing an interest in this area. Furthermore, the biomaterials act as a drug carrier or drug delivery agents or as protective nano or micro shells upgrading the biocompatibility of imaging agents.

Session on: Dental Implant

Implants are attaining popularity among the patients and are generally considered as a primary treatment option. Modern dentistry is emerging with the benefits of biomaterials in the healthcare sector. Research on materials sciences along with the biomechanics reveals optimization of design and material concepts for surgical implants. Biocompatibility is the prominent factor of implant material to demonstrate the favorable response in a biological environment. In the process of replacing a missing tooth, many biomaterials were discovered as implants which were an effort to create an optimal interaction between the living tissues and the implanted biomaterial. The key aspect is the prime importance of tissue response at the implant site which may cause a biochemical disturbance because of the presence of foreign materials.

Session on: Applications of Biomaterials and Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology is one of the topmost scientific research areas in the present era since it has the combination of knowledge from the fields of Science, Medicine, and Engineering. It is a developing technological sector with the substantial potential to lead to great innovations that can be applied in real life. The science and engineering field focus on making the particles, things, and devices at the atomic and molecular scale. Biomaterials are useful for applications like Joint replacements or hip replacements, Bone plates, Bone cement, Artificial ligaments and tendons, Dental implants for tooth fixation, Blood vessel prostheses, Heart valves, Skin repair devices (artificial tissue), Cochlear replacements and in the treatment of breast cancer.

Session on: Trending research on Biomaterials

NASA currently works on biomaterials for space research. NASA  nearly awards $100,000 to the research on 3D printing of biomaterials. NASA proposed to print anything from tools and composite building materials to food and human tissues. For example, being on any planet with the ability to replace any broken part, whether it's a part of your spacesuit, your habitat, or your own body. They are working on a technique that would just allow that. With the aid of printing 3D cells which secrete the necessary materials. The materials will be of biologically derived materials, the novel which previously was not possible to fabricate.
